A Kalispell community is reeling after an apparent murder-suicide claimed the lives of a family of four early Sunday morning.
According to Kalispell Police, officers responded to a mental health-related call at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Werner Peak Trail after a man, later identified as 39-year-old Nicholas Olson-Hartley, made disturbing statements to dispatchers. When police arrived and forced entry into the residence, they discovered a horrific scene: Nicholas, his wife Katie Olson-Hartley, 35, and their two children — a 6-year-old and a 7-month-old infant — all fatally shot.
Investigators believe Nicholas Olson-Hartley killed his wife and children before calling 911 and then taking his own life.

“After collecting evidence throughout the day and interviewing numerous people, we believe this tragic event to be the result of a murder-suicide,” said Kalispell Police in a press release issued late Sunday.
The release did not elaborate on a possible motive. Neighbors and friends described the Olson-Hartleys as a quiet family, and news of the deaths has left the neighborhood in shock.
This incident adds to a growing concern about the intersection of mental health struggles and domestic violence. Authorities emphasized the importance of reaching out for help before a crisis turns deadly.

The names of the children are being withheld at this time out of respect for the family’s privacy. Community members are planning a candlelight vigil later this week to remember the lives lost.
